Celebrating ten years of LUMIX G cameras

The year 2018 marks 10 years since Panasonic launched the LUMIX G Series with the world’s first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Camera, the LUMIX G1, in 2008*1. LUMIX G has seen amazing evolution in just ten years, with the release of 30 cameras*2 and 34 lenses. This level of innovation is a testament to the skills of our global LUMIX design team, and Panasonic’s ability to respond to the ever-changing needs of consumers.

LUMIX G | That was then

LUMIX DMC-G1, the first world’s mirrorless camera

At a time when photography enthusiasts wanted the professional results of an SLR camera, they continued to make do with compact cameras that were much easier to use. LUMIX was already leading the market with feature-packed compact cameras and in 2008 we closed the gap between compact and SLR with the launch of the G1. A downsized mirrorless body, advanced camera features and easy operational comfort meant the super-mobile G1 shattered the old notion that pro-style cameras could only be bulky, heavy and hard to use. This, along with the amazing picture quality of the 4/3 image sensor, redefined digital photography and put LUMIX G into a class of its own.

As a pioneer of the mirrorless camera, Panasonic then led the market in pursuing unique technologies for high picture quality, high performance, high-speed response and video recording capability. Ground-breaking LUMIX achievements include the development of the LUMIX GH4, which enabled the world’s first 4K video recording capability in a mirrorless camera*3, the introduction of Dual I.S. (Image Stabiliser) with the GX8; and 6K PHOTO*4, released with the GH5, delivering high-speed burst shooting at 30 fps in 18-megapixel resolution with no time restrictions.

LUMIX G | This is now

Since 2008, we’ve been changing photography with the LUMIX G mirrorless camera series. Each model combines high quality images, portability and ease-of-use, designed to turn every user into a great photographer. Guided by the vision of “Changing Photography”, LUMIX will continue the development challenge over the next 10 years to further promote the company’s position as an industry innovator and introduce a steady stream of exciting new technologies.

We recently expanded our lineup of cutting-edge digital cameras with world-acclaimed flagship models: including the LUMIX GH5, the ultimate hybrid camera; the LUMIX G9, which boasts uncompromising performance for still photography; and most recently the LUMIX GH5S, which brings the highest-ever sensitivity and video quality to the LUMIX range. Along with the evolution of LUMIX G Series cameras, we’ve also expanded our range of interchangeable lenses to suit any shooting situation, whether it’s a beautifully composed portrait, an action-packed sports scene, or a safari wildlife shot.
