In response to customer needs, Panasonic created the Toughbook brand. Now an undisputed leader in the world of rugged notebooks and tablets,  Toughbook has come to be highly trusted by users in a wide range of businesses and industries.

It’s a story that began more than 15 years ago after major PC manufacturers turned down corporate customer requests to make a notebook PC with a built-in CD-ROM drive.

Panasonic recognised the value in this market and succeeded in creating the world’s first integrated CD drive in a notebook that could take the hard knocks of everyday work life and still continue to operate. And so the Toughbook line was born…

Toughbook Milestones

1987

Toughbook engineers gained valuable insights from the development of one of the most robust mobile computers of its time, especially with regard to using carbon fibre for notebook cases.

1996

Toughbook were the first computer manufacturer to enter the very special market segment of ruggedised notebooks, with the drop-shock resistant CF-25.

2002

Toughbook debuted the first wearable-solution with the CF-VDW07; a wireless display could interface with any WLAN-equipped Toughbook model.

2003

With the CF-18, Toughbook introduced the first robust notebook on the market with a pivotal touch screen that could transforms it into a tablet PC in an instant.

2007

By this point, Toughbook were the enviable innovators of the rugged mobile computer segment, producing a range of models that each offered the best possible balance of long battery life, reduced weight and robustness.

2008

Toughbook introduced the specialised ruggedized CF-U1 UMPC for field application and santiseable CF-H1 MCA for healthcare market.

2012/2013

Toughbook took a huge leap forward, expanding the portfolio by introducing new product category of Toughpad tablets, designed to take the mobile workforce even further.
