Photography Blog has put Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-TZ40 through its paces and we’re thrilled to report they have given it their Essential award and an impressive 5 stars, viewing the camera as a significant step forward for Panasonic’s “wildly popular” travel-zoom range.
The review notes that the “TZ40 is veritably stuffed to the gills with cutting-edge features, while the combination of a 20x zoom, effective stabilisation system and good image quality is hard to resist.” Features called out include the increase in megapixel count from 14 to 18, and the new 60/50p and High Speed modes for videographers.
The inclusion of a touchscreen interface, built-in wi-fi connectivity and GPS, a 5-axis image stabilisation system, a fast burst mode, and high-resolution screen, all in a smaller and lighter package than the TZ40‘s predecessor, “makes it easy to see why we like the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 even more than last year’s model.”
With a conclusion that the “Lumix DMC-TZ40 is Panasonic’s best ever travel-zoom camera and a worthy winner of our Essential award”, it’s a smart choice for photographers looking for a high performance camera. Struggling with this camera the wifi has to reset every time and I can’t seem to turn the green GPS light off..so every time I go to use the camera the battery if flat
Hi Ruth, you can absolutely turn the GPS function off. To do this Press the MENU/SET button and then select the GPS menu tab and press MENU/SET. Using the up and down arrows select GPS SETTING and then press MENU/SET. Finally using the up and down arrows select OFF and press MENU/SET. A message will appear on your screen prompting you to confirm. After confirming press MENU/SET. This should help your battery last longer, thanks.

I have had my DMC TZ40 for a few weeks. I have no idea how to use the different facilities and need a manual. To study as I practice. I need TROUBLESHOOTING. Where can i download one?
Plus…..a problem. I have a 16g card and have taken only 255 shots. Until today I could see them when pressing the green arrow at the back of the camera. NOW all the photos i took today in the mountains of China show a sign seeing ‘this image cant be displayed’ and wont let me see any of them from 255. I have no idea how to show a display of all the photos. I am desperate. What can I do please? Is it the camera or the card? Is it me not knowing how to use the camera?
Hi Sarah, this link will provide the basic and advanced manuals: http://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/imaging/lumix-cameras/dmc-tz40.html.
