Tough solutions for a Tough industry

The Australian mining sector is experiencing a period of “production-led expansion” through 2030. Technology that can not only withstand but optimally perform in harsh onsite conditions is leading this growth.

Panasonic has been a leader in rugged IT for more than 30 years — fostering technology leadership in some of the most demanding sectors globally.

Its TOUGHBOOK range of rugged mobile computing products and accessories are designed to overcome mobile computing challenges in diverse and hostile environments. The range is comprised of the most secure Windows laptops on the market, modular 2-in-1 notebooks and the toughest tablets on earth.

More than just a name, Panasonic overseas everything from development and engineering through to manufacturing, marketing, sales and long-term support for customers.

Panasonic Australia Mobile Solutions General Manager Marc Amelung says the latest solutions include the groundbreaking TOUGHBOOK 40.

“The TOUGHBOOK 40 is a rugged laptop offering unrivalled flexibility in even the most demanding and unpredictable environments,” he said.

“Designed for all-day, rugged and field use, TOUGHBOOK 40 is extremely robust, highly modular and has an exceptional battery life of up to 24 hours in dual battery mode.”

Panasonic also offers a range of accessories to ensure the TOUGHBOOK is adaptable to any working environment, including long shifts and harsh environments. This includes desktop and vehicle docks and mounts, high-capacity batteries, protective cases for screen longevity, and modular, user-replaceable expansion packs.

Customers can easily tailor their devices with accessories or upgrades, such as smart card readers or additional USB ports, to suit their operating environment.

That flexibility means TOUGHBOOK solutions remain in service longer in the field, with technology that evolves as needs change over time.

“We put our TOUGHBOOK range through rigorous testing during development,” Mr Amelung said.

“Every product is built and tested to strict military standards, including MIL-STD-810H, so it can handle drops, vibration, extreme temperatures and exposure to water and dust.”

From the Pilbara to the Bowen Basin, Panasonic’s TOUGHBOOK solutions are designed to withstand dust, moisture and extreme temperatures, even in some of the harshest mining conditions.

From specialised “rubberised” keyboards designed to protect devices from dust to glove touch compatible screens and capability to connect to diagnostic equipment in the field, our purpose-built solutions are designed to keep pace with real-world conditions — supported by industry-leading security and connectivity.

Panasonic works closely with customers across mining and other mission-critical industries to make sure TOUGHBOOK evolves with changing needs and reliability, adaptability and longevity are what matters most when it comes to technology in tough environments.

Panasonic is invested in the industry and to supporting customers where they operate with local, on-the-ground support with dedicated teams and business representatives in regions like WA and Queensland.

“We’re excited to be introducing a range of new TOUGHBOOK devices in 2026 and user configuration will remain a core focus of how we design and deliver our solutions,” Mr Amelung said.

Technology is a real enabler for the mining sector, and Panasonic is right there with customers to help them turn operational challenges into long-term advantages.
