The household iron is such a commonplace appliance that it’s hard to imagine a time when they were a luxury item out of the reach of ordinary consumers. But in the 1920s most electrical products were actually luxury items – a fact that Panasonic founder, Konosuke Matsushita, dedicated most of his early career to changing.
In 1927, Konosuke achieved great success with the company’s first volume-produced electrical appliance: the innovative Super Electric Iron. Featuring a heater sandwiched between two iron plates, Konosuke’s invention equalled the quality of higher-priced models but was 30% cheaper than competitor irons.
He believed that the general public would welcome a high-quality product at a reasonable price and his gamble paid off. The iron sold well Super Electric Iron and the success of this experiment saw the company continue with what is now a life-long pursuit of creating quality electrical products at affordable prices.
