Bushfires temporarily put 2011 World Solar Challenge on hold

The three leaders of the 2011 World Solar Challenge including Tokai University, Nuon Solar Team and University of Michigan have been locked in an epic battle throughout the day. Adding more drama to the event and highlighting the extreme conditions in which they are racing, all 3 teams have temporarily stopped in Wauchope, 116 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, due to closure of Barrow Creek which is experiencing bushfires.

All teams are safe, however, Northern Territory Police have currently closed the Stuart Highway both ways between Ti Tree and Wauchope. Event officials are monitoring the situation and will keep teams advised. All timing and positions of the teams are being recorded with Tokai University having an approximate 8min lead over Nuon Solar Team.
