Toughbook CF-19 assists Pinery Fire crime scene experts-HERO

South Australian paper, The Bunyip recently featured our Toughbook CF-19 rugged notebook praising it for offering new technology that was able to assist the South Australian Police (SAPOL) investigate the Pinery Fire that burnt out approximately 85,000 ha of land in the Balaklava / Roseworthy area in South Australia’s mid north in November 2015.

The devastating fire resulted in fatalities and the destruction of homes, businesses, farms, vehicles and property. SAPOL crime scenes experts faced with the difficult task of processing more than 370 fire scenes but investigators were greatly aided by the provision of a 49 Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 rugged computers.

“Unfortunately, this kind of crime scene work is not like TV,” Detective Superintendent Yvette Clark said.

“Until now, it has been a painstaking, paper-driven process, with duplication of data entry completed at the end of the day’s work and at risk of error due to complications caused by rural locations.

“For the first time, at the Pinery fire ground we used the Toughbook computers – which led to real-time information gathering and live visibility for managers over the data and the taskings.”

Thanks to the Toughbook CF-19’s applications, investigators were able to process information more rapidly and accurately, sparing affected communities the distress of repeated assessment visits and expediting insurance claims.

“On the first day after the fire – the Friday – we did crime-scene processing the old way and went to 49 scenes, but didn’t complete any of the data entry,” Detective Superintendent Clark said.

“Then, between Saturday and Sunday we did 146, with all the data uploaded and cross-referenced to other SAPOL information to ensure that all scenes are attended.”
