It’s difficult to believe what is written at Panasonic’s ‘Global Environmental Initiatives’ website after what I discovered today. http://www.eco-ideas.com.au/index.cfm
When we went to the shop to buy a microwave, we took along our power meter which monitors the amount of electricity used by an appliance.
(Just like this one: http://www.todae.com.au/Products/powermeters/powermeter/ )
We tested a Panasonic microwave first. When just sitting there with the clock on, not being used, it used 83 Watts (.083kW) That means that microwave costs $137 each year just to have it plugged in!! (.083 * 24 hours *365 days = 727 kWh each year | at 18.843 c/kWh = $137 for one year *) How much wasted energy and greenhouse gas emissions is that?
The LG microwave was 24 Watts ($39 each year)
The Samsung microwave didn’t register on the meter because it was using such a low amount of electricity when not in use. (My choice of microwave was easy!)
This shows that the environmental talk of Panasonic is just all ‘greenwash’. Panasonic should make microwaves and other electrical appliances which do not waste energy.
Thanks for commenting Nikki.
Let us assure that Panasonic Australia is very committed to the initiates outlined at http://www.eco-ideas.com.au
The power meter that you have used is not really accurate at measuring standby currents due to the way it measures the current. Panasonic microwave ovens typically use between 2 & 3 watts in standby depending on the voltage as this can vary from 220V to 250V. If the microwave was indeed using 83W in standby the microwave would also be getting very hot due to the heat produced from dissipating the 83W –good example is the heat radiated from a 60W globe the microwave would be dissipating similar amounts of heat if it was using 83W in standby. The industry had a target or 4W or less by 2007 which all our current microwave ovens meet.
We hope this helps you understand our microwave’s energy efficiency better.

I bought a Panasonic DMR-ES35V DVD recorder in April 07. The DVD ram disk had trouble in Mar08, fortunately it was with a year warranty period so I was able to be replaced a new ram disk, free. Now, my ram disk has trouble as before (error code U61 again). The first ram disk lasted for 11 months and the second one lasted for 16 months. It is a little bit better but unacceptable to consumer. Panasonic used to have a good reputation of better quality but not now. The product is not durable and relaible as before, or this product has this well-known fault not being fixed from the factory.
Hello and apologies for your continued issues with the DMR.
In your case we would recommend contacting our customer care and they can assess the problem properly and find you the best solution.
