This weekend Panasonic is launching a new campaign surrounding AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec for High Definition), spearheaded by a TV commercial, created by The Campaign Palace. The following is an insight into the making of the campaign from brief to final product.

Campaign Background

The Brief

People currently use a variety of methods to share and store their still pictures and video footage. Compounding this, they may also be using products from a range of different brands, which aren’t necessarily designed to work together. It’s difficult for your average punter to shoot stills/footage, get the images off the camera/camcorder onto a larger screen (computer or TV) to watch them, share them with friends, and then store the data safely.

Panasonic has a simple solution. It’s called the SD card. The same card that you save your pictures/video on can then be taken out of your camera/camcorder and inserted directly into your Viera TV to play back what you’ve just shot. It can then be placed directly into your DVD/Blu-Ray recorder so you can permanently store the images/footage. No cables, no computers, no complicated uploading or file sharing. No worries.

And to sweeten the deal, everything you shoot, watch and save is of the highest possible quality. Panasonic’s camcorders and still cameras shoot in high definition, Viera’s TVs play back in high definition, and their DVD/Blu-Ray recorders store it all in high definition. Panasonic is the only company who currently offer this quality across the board.

Campaign Objective

Communicate the functionality of AVCHD recording, easy play back on Panasonic Viera TV’s and simple storage on Panasonic Blu-ray or DVD Recorders, positioning Panasonic as the perfect solution for the whole family to view their memories.

Target Audience

Whilst the more technically proficient (e.g. Confidents) have most likely patched together a solution, it can be pretty frustrating for people who aren’t so comfortable with technology (e.g. KISSers) to figure it all out -- so we focused primarily on the KISSers segment.

The simplicity of the solution will appeal greatly to this audience. It will allow them to record, remember and share special events in their lives, with ease and confidence. It will also give them peace of mind that their memories are preserved for posterity.

Our secondary target segment is the Confidents -- more likely to be middle aged males who get excited about technology. They will understand the AVCHD technology and will be impressed with the idea of recording and playing back the best possible quality still and video footage.

Proposition

Effortlessly shoot, share and safe-keep

Creative Approach

The idea would need to be impactful enough to stand out while supporting a simple product demonstration.

‘Big Screen Birth’ delivers the message simply while grabbing the viewer’s attention with a humourous twist. The natural performance of the characters is incredibly important in bringing to life the scenario in a comical way without the risk of becoming a cliché.

The Director ‘Hamish Rothwell’ believes the commercial is a great mix of awkwardness, embarrassment and shock and will be a truly memorable spot.

Location

The TVC was filmed in the Myer city store. Filming commenced at 8pm and wrapped at 8am the following day when most of the city was just beginning their day -- the film crew, cast, clients and agency were on their way home to bed!

All well and good if you plan to put all your eggs in the Panasonic basket. I have a brand new Sony Bravia HD TV, another brand DVD recorder and a powerful PC with Windows Vista Ultimate with Service pack 2.
Since buying the new Panasonic HDC SD20 camcorder I have discovered that AVCHD is compatible with nothing.
I can’t even get the supplied software HD Writer AE 1.0 for HDC to install on my PC.

    Steve Miller

    • panasonicau

Thank you for contacting us Stephen.
Sony Bravia TV’s don’t appear to have any AVCHD compatibility, but if you would kindly provide us with more details as to the product models we will be able to answer with certainty.
      Many thanks,
      Daniel

I too cannot get HDWriter AE1.0 to run on my new pc as it has Vista Service Pack 2 and the software is not compatible. I wrote to Panasonic almost 2 weeks ago and I have not heard anything back yet. The manual states you must use this software to download the video footage but how can you if the software is not compatible. When will Panasonic bring out a compatible version? The latest update on the download section does not fix this problem.

    • panasonicau

      Hi David,
HD Writer AE 1.0 is compatible with Windows Vista SP1 & SP2. There is a warning message displayed when installing this program on Vista SP2 however it can be ignored to continue the installation. To help you further we have the following questions:
      1. Did the software install?
      2. Was the start up ok and if yes which function is not working?
      3. In regards to your letter was it sent to Panasonic UK or Australia?
      We hope to help further.
      Many thanks,
      Team Panasonic

      • David Rose

Thanks for the reply. I ignored the message and installed the HD Write AE1.0 softare and seemed to install ok apart from the PowerChecker software aborting during the process. Now when I start the HD Witer software I get the following error message -

“The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click OK to terminate the application”

I get the same message when the pc starts up and the HW Writer background task fails to start also.

I cannot get any of the software to run.

My email was sent to the Panasonic UK team and I’ve still not had any reply!

        Appreciate any help!!

My PC is a Dell Inspiron , Intel Quad, 4Gb RAM running Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP2

Hi I am trying to install Panasonic HD Writer AE 1.0 on my Windows XP.

My Pc froze when the install was 98% done. I had no option but to shut my pc and restart.

After reboot I tried to install again. I get the message ” Please restart PC to complete the previous uninstallation. Try after restart. Installation will be terminated. ”

I tried restart of PC and tried again. but i kept getting same message.

I have deleted the folder where I had originally installed, removed al Pnasonic entries using regedit.

The problem still does not go away.

Could you please advise what I could do.

    Thanks for your help.

    • panasonicau

      Hi Raj,
      Thanks for contacting us :)
      HD Writer AE1.0 works with XP Home Edition SP2 & SP3, XP Home Professional SP2 & SP3.
There are other min. requirements such as processor speed, RAM size etc that need to be taken into account for correct installation.
When removing a program from a pc it should be removed through the uninstall function of “add & remove programs” in “control panel”. Once done try & re-install the software.

There is also an update to this software that is available from the Panasonic Global website, please use this link. http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/soft/download/hdw_ae1053.html

      Hope this helps,
      Team Panasonic

      • Bugg

thank you but it does not solve the issue. I have exactly the same problem – uninstallation program froze in the middle of the process, and I can’t uninstall HD Writer. The name of the program is not in the “Add/remove programs” control panel anymore, so there is no other way than to manually uninstall the program. Would appreciate your advice on what entries and files should be deleted. Thanks!

        • panasonicau

          Hi Bugg,
For the best help please call our customer care on 132 600 as they will be able to go into more detail and talk you through the process.

  4. Hannes de Beer

I have a Canon HF100 video camera (NTSC bought in America) which records full high def in AVCHD (.mts file structure) on a 16Gb SDHC card. When inserting the card into the panasonic THP50G10A SD card slot, the TV does recognise the photo stills (.jpg file format) but does not recognise the video clips on the card. I bought the TV in Australia.

My brother bought the American version of the same TV. He has exactly the same camera as me and his video clips from his Canon plays perfectly on his TV without any post editing.

I should be able to take my SDHC card out of my camera, put it into the TV’s SD card slot and it should play my video clips. This was one of the swaying factors that made me buy the G10A.

    Best Regards,

    Hannes de Beer

    • panasonicau

      Hello Hannes de Beer,

      Thank you for contacting us.
The Panasonic G10 sold in Australia only support 50Hz AVCHD playback whilst the American Panasonic G10 supports 60Hz AVCHD playback instead.

Your Canon HF100 (NTSC bought in America) AVCHD is 60Hz and therefore there is a compatibility issue here.

      All the best,
      Team Panasonic

  5. Eric Gee

I own a Panasonic TX-P42G10 on which I have tried to play video-files converted to AVCHD in various settings, so far to no avail.

Seems the TV is only able to play files recorded with a panasonic camcorder or digicam?

Would like to give it another try if somebody could give me the settings to use in the encoding of files and / or the file and folder structure required.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thx, Eric

    • panasonicau

      Hi Eric :)
      Thanks for getting in touch.
AVCHD encoding must be 50Hz. In addition the file structure, folders etc must mimic the file structure, folders etc as generated by AVCHD camcorders.
      Hope this helps,
      Team Panasonic

  6. Cheng Toh

    Hi,
I have a HDC-SD20 camcorder and DMRBW850 Blu Ray Recorder. I have taken some video and have plug the SD into the DMRBW850 to a Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5500.

I had expected the image quality to be extremely good. Unfortunately it was extremely poor. I had better quality image on old Conia LCD using AV connection. The question I have is if I was to copy the video from the SD to HDD and then burn a DVD , or BLU RAY. Will the quality improve ?

    • panasonicau

      Hello Cheng,
The quality of the image shown by the TV is highly dependent on a number of factors. The connection type would need to be HDMI in order to see the best picture quality available. The original source footage would need to be recorded in the best format, in this case AVCHD for the HDC-SD20.
If in doubt take the SD card to your local retailer and ask them to try it in the Blu Ray recorder on display plugged into the Panasonic TV. This will allow you to compare the quality shown by the Panasonic Viera TV and the Sony Bravia. I wouldn’t expect the quality of the image to be any better if copied to another media.
Hope this helps you out :)
      Team Panasonic

  7. Meaghan Briggs

    Hi there,

I have a Lumix DMC-FT1 which I’ve used to record AVCHD Lite video. I also have a Mac. I have been able to download all my still pictures no problem onto my Mac but it does not even recognise that there are videos on the SD card. The software provided for the camera was only for PC’s. Is there Mac software available?

    Regards,

    Meaghan

    • panasonicau

      Hi Meaghan,
Panasonic does not supply Application Software with our cameras for Apple PC’s. Best to contact Apple regarding AVCHD format compatibility for your PC.
Please see page 120 of your operating instructions which discusses what PC functions are compatible with what types of PCs.
      Hope this helps,
      Team Panasonic

I am trying to install HD Writer 2.OE for SX/SD on my computer. It uses XP Service Pack 3.
It started to load the first time then froze so I shut computer down and tried to load again. I get an error box saying I need XP SP2.
Also, once I resolve this and get the video on a disk (the camera I borrowed so I need the video on a disk) can I then play it on my laptop? Can I then edit it using Sony Vegas software?
Thanks, I hope you can help.
    Helen

    • panasonicau

      Hi Helen,
      Thanks for contacting us.
There is an update to this Application Software for SP3, it can be downloaded from: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/soft/download/v20l018e_sd5.html
HD Writer 2.0E uses AVCHD files, if the Sony Vegas software is compatible with this file format it should be able to be edited in that programme?
      Hope this helps,
      Team Panasonic

I am trying to install HD writer AE1.5 on compatibility mode (windows 7/Vista). I get a warning, but I install and applicaiton runs properly, but when I connect the camera and try to download files, it crashes. I am able to go up to the option of copying to the PC or Disk option and then it crashes. The error msg details says that the drivecontrol.dll is the faulty module. Any help?. I am running this on a 64 bit system, but I have tried it on a 32 bit as well and the same effect.

I did call the number and I was told that it won’t work since the Camera was bought in Japan the DVD is Japenese version. I am able to install the SW but it crashes that’s my problem and I am not sure it should happen whether in Japan or here. The Panasonic website says that AE1.5 evenworks with windows 7. I would call the number again and I hope the answer is not the same as before that it won’t work since it’s a Japanese versions!!

    Cheers,

I have a Panasonic plasma with Viera Cast that I really like. I think people might buy even more Panasonic’s with Viera Cast if you offered a utility that converts old videos to Panasonic’s AVCHD format especially if we could use a USB drive.

  15. Richard

Is this website kept up to date? It appears as though it isn’t as the last entry is dated 7 December 2009.
My question is.. Will a SD card recorded in AVCHD on the Cannon Legria HF21 video camera play on my new 54 inch Panasonic Plasma TV (TH-P54S10A)? The Cannon video data specifications are AVCHD 1080/50i. 1080/25P (Maximum AVCHD 24Mbps).
    Thanking you
    Richard

    • panasonicau

      Hi Richard,
Yes we create new blog posts regularly and try to get back to your questions as quickly as possible.
In answer to your question, yes, the SD card will play on your Panasonic Plasma.

I have a Panasonic TX-L37V10 TV and also Panasonic HDC-HS300 Camcorder. The TV is a UK model the Camcorder was bought in Japan. I can play movies on TV through a HDMI cable but am unable to play movies from the SD card. Are these items compatable? Also, are movies shown at their best via an sd card or via a HDMI cable.
    Thanks

    • panasonicau

      Hello Jack,
      Thanks for your question.
The UK TV SD card slot will only playback video’s recorded at 50Hz frame rates. The HDC-HS300 records video @ 60Hz.
      Hope this helps,

    I’ve installed AE 1.0 and tried to run it but get this;

Cannot run since a panasonic application is running which prevents other applications from running simultaneously (code;457-W-1)

    What’s happening please?

    If it helps, I’ve a HDC-HS20

    Thanks

    Ian

    • panasonicau

      Hello Ian,
      Thanks for contacting us.
From the information you describe there may be another similar program running or in the back ground while you are trying to use HD Writer AE 1.0. If this is the case then please see pg 10 of the Operating Instructions for the software which states:

“This software cannot be used simultaneously with other time-shifting image editing software or video capture products. Note that other software running background processes, timer recording in particular,
may cause this software to malfunction.”

Best thing to try is to close all other programs & check the program again.

      Cheers,
      Team Panasonic

  19. Ian Rook

The error message has now gone, but on trying to open the program by double clicking on the desktop icon, all I get is a blue screen with some diagram on it…………and that\\\’s it!! It just sits there and does nothing at all. HELP!

    Thanks

    Ian

    • panasonicau

      Hi Ian,
What operating system are you using? there is an update for Windows 7 that can be downloaded at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/soft/download/hdw_ae1055.html
Being a computer based problem it is quite difficult to help without more detail as you may have an issue with your PC running the program. I suggest calling us on 132 600 and we can workshop the problem over the phone.
      All the best,

Running XP Pro, so the update you suggest is of no use. I’ve given up trying to call………

My partner has purchased a Viera TH-42PX600A 42 inch plasma tv. He has a dvd/vcr recorder (no inbuilt hard disk) attached to the tv. I have a maxtor portable hard disk drive and a Western Digital portable hard disk drive. I have a collection of movies I’d like to watch on the plasma, which are currently stored on these two hard drives, plus some more on my pc’s hard drive.

How do I watch these movies on the plasma. Can I plug any of my equipment into a slot/port/usb drive on the plasma. Or is it going to be much more complicated than that?

Many thanks and cheers for now, S Francis.

    • panasonicau

      Hi Francis,
      Thanks for contacting us.
Unfortunately, this model TV has no slots/ports to support external/portable disk drives.
      Hope this helps,

I have camera Panasonic DMC-TZ7. I want to purchase best suitable LCD TV which show all my videos in AVCHD format. Could you please suggest which Model from Panasonic is good in 32 inch Model in India.

    Best Regards
    Hari.

  23. Lou

I have a Viera Plasma wth SD input, all good so far, but!

I don’t own a Panasonic Videocam or still camera, I have manually transfered .jpg and .mpg files to the card.

when I insert it into the TV it will not reconise the files (yes I have pressed SD card button on the remote, and navigated to movies/pic), it just will not “see” the files.

no I’m guessing it needs to be formatted via a Panasonic digicam, if so, what is the directory structure so I can recreate it on my computer.

    will that work?

    • panasonicau

      Hi Lou,
      Thanks for your question.
We’ll be best able to help if you obtain your TV model number then call our customer service line on 132 600 to speak directly to our technician.
In the mean time the SD card file structure information is also detailed in the TV’s user manual.
      Cheers,
      Team Panasonic

  24. Mr. Grey

I have bought a 50″ panasonic plasma and cannot get any AVCHD videos to play back. I have tried to format them in a number of ways. Why does panasonic keep the way to do it a secret? Why is their no step by step instructions? Panasonic customers would be much happier if they produced a program that will encode into their format. How do I get the best out of what is a pretty good TV on face value?

    • panasonicau

      Hello Mr Grey,
It is a bit hard to answer without knowing the Panasonic TV model No or Camera Model No you’re speaking of. However hopefully this will help.
The AVCHD video file format (jointly developed by Panasonic & Sony) is fast becoming the industry standard for CE video cameras. Panasonic TVs with AVCHD capabilities are specifically designed for camera to TV playback. Panasonic TV’s sold in Australia support AVCHD video captured at 50Hz frame rates only (not 60Hz USA standard).
For AVCHD file structure please visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD

The previous videos that did download with no problems and playbacked great now playback on HD Writer jerky, slow/fast sections, etc. Do I need a HDwriter AE upgrade or Windows7?

    • panasonicau

      Hi CJ,

I have HD Writer AE1 installed on a laptop running Windows 7. I have downloaded and used the Windows 7 update program. The problem is writing to a DVD. When the time comes to select from the “save to” drop down list, there is no drive to select. The program says the device is not installed correctly. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem as a previous post.

I am trying to install Panasonic HD Writer AE 1.0 on my Windows XP. My PC froze when the install was 98% done and I shut my pc down and restarted it.

After rebooting, I tried to install again and got the message, ”Please restart PC to complete the previous uninstallation. Try after restart. Installation will be terminated. ”

I have completely removed the program through the uninstall function of “add & remove programs” in “control panel”.

Stuck getting the same message every time I try to install now even though the unistallation is complete and the HD Writer AE is no longer on my computer.

    • panasonicau

      Hi Michelle,
      Thank you for your question.
Software installation issues can be quite difficult to diagnose/repair & really require an IT specialist to assist. There are no updates etc for any installation issues with this software, so it may be best to have the pc looked at by an IT specialist.
      All the best,
      Team Panasonic

I am happy to be corrected but i don’t believe that my Panasonic Plasma TV (TH-P50S10A) can play back Mpeg2 or AVCHD video under any conditions from the SD card slot. So Mr. Panasonic post a link to a demo video that I can load onto my SD card and cut the confusion and time wasting.
    ]
What are you going to say now SD card formatting!! Yeh right!
    [

    • panasonicau

      Hi Mario,
The TH-P50S10A SD card slot facility is designed for camera to TV viewing applications without the need for PC editing. SD card data modified or created on a PC may not be displayed.
The Operating Instructions (P.47) also note that “Format the card with the recording equipment’, ie; SD card must be formatted using the camera’s format utility. The TV may not recognize the SD card when it’s formatted by other means.
      All the best,

I have used a HDC Tm300 for about a year, and I also got the message “error occurred during importing process” from time to time,(with Vista and with Win 7). The latest upgrade to HD Writer 1.0L56 solved the problem completely for me.

  32. Justin Anthony Sneddon

I have been using my new Panasonic HDC-HS300 with HD Writer for about 6 months now with no real problems. On 16th July 2010 I attended an air show and had filmed several dozen clips, then on one it stopped recording and told me there was an error so it had stopped. I turned the camera off then on and that was last I heard of it. However, when I returned home and tried downloading the footage I received the message – Error occured during importing process.[ 0x80070020 ] – after a few minutes of downloading. Many of the clips had successfully downloaded, but about 30-40% hadn’t and wouldn’t. I tried reloading AE, installing the Windows 7 update, turning the camcoder off and on, copying the files that hadn’t been transfered to an SD card and putting it straight into my laptop – the same message was displayed.

Another thing I would like to point out is that I am getting an annoying jerky effect when I pan the camera while recording. If you watch it it looks like I have actually not been holding the camera steady, but I can assure you on a perfectly good pan an enormous shake appears several times. This has ruined many of my shots, and am wondering if this is an error or just another annoying effect of using 50i AVCHD. It tends to happen more so when I am zoomed right in, and I was just wondering if it may be related to this transfer problem?

I’m having trouble burning anything to DVD using HD Writer AE 1.0. I have Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 and I’m trying to burn to a DVD-RW which I have formatted. HD Writer does not recognise the DVD when I try to burn using either “Create Media” button or “Create DVD” through the “Simple Menu”. In the “Create DVD” screen the “Select Write Destination” drop down box is blank and displays a message saying “cannot find accessible driver/adapter/video camera. Connect device correctly”. I know the DVD is good because I can burn other files to it through Windows. I also am able to copy files from HD Writer onto my SDHC card because it is recognised in the “Select Write Destination” dropdown box whereas the DVD isn’t. Advice please.

      Hi Gary,

Is that hdc-SD250 or hdcHS250? Neither of these camcorders were ever sold in Australia, whereabouts did you buy it? Have you tried downloading the new hd writer 2.06 software?

      Many Thanks,

      Team Panasonic

I am trying to convert XVID or X264 videos into a compatible AVCHD format that will work with my Panasonic Plasma TCP42G25. I am using Xilisoft HD Video Converter. So far nothing that I’ve converted has worked. What settings do I need to use to make compatible videos? I am in Canada.

      Hi Christopher,

Final AVCHD file structure must be exactly as that generated by an AVCHD camera. Please contact Xilisoft HD Video Converter supplier for further assistance.

      Many Thanks,

      Team Panasonic
